Where was Game Of Thrones Filmed?

The filming of the Game of Thrones series spanned eight years and encompassed multiple countries. While a substantial portion of the series was produced within professional sets and sound stages, the enchantment of Westeros reaches well beyond fiction. Stretching from the expansive deserts of Morocco to the majestic cliffs of Ireland, the imagined fantasy realm of Westeros will come alive in these real-world locations.

Dubrovnik Old Town

Adorned with ancient fortresses, baroque churches, and hilltop monasteries, Dubrovnik Old Town is an enchanting location. Arguably the most iconic in Croatia for Game of Thrones fans, the Jesuit Staircase near St. Dominic Street is where Cersei Lannister was forced to make her “walk of shame” through town.

In a contrasting scene, the Rector’s Palace serves as the filming location where Daenerys makes a cunning deal with the Spice King of Qarth.

Heading further outside the stone walls of Old Town is the iconic Red Keep Gate, or more accurately, the Ploče Gate.

Trsteno Arboretum

A remarkably small yet exquisitely beautiful filming location from Game of Thrones is the Trsteno Arboretum. This picturesque site served as the exterior garden for several noble families in Westeros, with the Lannisters prominently featured. Originally constructed as a summer retreat for an affluent family, it eventually evolved into a public park due to the sheer magnificence of its garden, Neptune fountain, pavilion, and aqueducts.

Island of Lokrum

Located on the eastern Croatian Coast, the island has been converted into a haven for television series fans. The former Lokrum Monastery was used as the filming location for Qarth, where Daenerys forged connections with powerful allies.

The Benedictine monastery has been refitted for guests and even includes a fan-oriented visitor center, with the most notable exhibit being a replica Iron Throne! Your clients can even stop inside, free of charge, for a photo-op!

Ait Ben Haddou

This ancient town stands as the most unmistakable destination for Game of Thrones enthusiasts. Clients are likely to identify this locale from other renowned movies such as Gladiator and Kingdom of Heaven. Built-in the 17th century as a defensive stronghold, the fort is adorned with structures fashioned from red sandstone, displaying the captivating Moroccan architectural style.

This town was employed as the backdrop for Yunkai, a pivotal site for the adversaries of Daenerys. It was within these very walls that she orchestrated the liberation of the oppressed populace, an accomplishment that earned her admiration from her newfound followers.

Situated on the Atlantic Coast of Morocco is the island village of Essaouira. Here, the Game of Thrones crew filmed Daenerys freeing a large population of enslaved people from their captors.

The tall ramparts, with their battlements and sea views, are the perfect setting for a fantasy show and a relaxing vacation! Situated on the shoreline is a vast wall that was built to protect the ancient city from invasion, and the most recognizable one is Bastion Nord.

Additionally, the Sqala du Port, a defensive tower, makes the perfect backdrop for any traveler – whether they’re a fan of the show or not.

Fair Head Cliffs

Standing tall at 2,000 ft (600 m) above sea level, Fair Head is the highest cliff in Northern Ireland. With a beautiful cerulean backdrop, Antrim’s northeast coastline is the perfect contrast to Ireland’s vibrant green hills.

It was perfect for directors to portray the cliffs of Dragonstone, where John Snow has an important meeting with Daenerys and her dragons. Nearby, Ballintoy Harbor became the Iron Island called Pyke and the Larrybane Quarry served as the army camp where Brienne of Tarth became a Kingsguard.

Downhill Beach

Directly off the Causeway Coastal Route, Downhill Beach is a 7 mi (11 km) stretch of sandy shores and tall cliffs. In the show, this is Dragonstone, specifically where Stannis Baratheon swears allegiance to the Lord of Light and burns the effigies of the Seven Gods.

At the top of a nearby cliff is a dreamy recreation of the Temple of Vesta in Rome – a circular temple with beautiful architecture. The overlook provides a perfect view for your clients to imagine their life in Westeros!

Alcázar of Seville

Arguably one of the most beautiful palaces in Spain, the Alcázar of Seville was previously occupied by affluent people like the Spanish Royal Family. Notes of Arabic and Moroccan design and architecture are notable in the details adorning the palace, especially in the garden.

It’s only fitting that the Game of Thrones crew chose this real-life location to represent the affluent House Martell.

Another destination nearby is the Patio del Crucero, which Lady Maria de Padilla used as water baths during the show. This setting adds another layer of depth to the already rich history that permeates the Alcázar’s grounds.

Cathedral of Girona

A small but charming town in Catalonia, Girona is the perfect location to bring the city of Braavos to life in the Game of Thrones series. The old-world charm and influence are evident in the cobblestone streets, fortified walls, and medieval churches.

One of the most celebrated places for fans is the spectacular steps of the Cathedral of Girona. The large baroque staircase makes the perfect foreground to use as the Great Sept of Baelor in King’s Landing, where Jamie Lannister fought the High Sparrow.

This location will be also notable to fans of Arya Stark as the spot where she fled and began her life as an assassin. Its picturesque streets and monumental steps stand as a testament to the series’ enduring legacy, a living tribute to the intricate tapestry of emotions and battles that unfolded on screen.

As one of the most picturesque spots near Seville, Osuna leaves a mark on any traveler’s soul. The city is lined with romantic churches, ancient fortresses, and stunning views of the Spanish mountains.

Contrasting the serene real-life setting, the Plaza del Toros is one of the largest bullrings in Spain. On a good day, there would have been at least 40,000+ people in attendance waiting to watch a bullfight or boxing match. It was here that the filming crew transformed the land into the Great Pit of Daznak in Meereen, with its gigantic sandy fighting arena. The city is proud of its association with Game of Thrones, and two museums can be toured in addition to these great locations.
